Combat Stress With A Superfood Beet Latte

Love them or hate them, beetroot, most commonly known as beets, are loaded with essential vitamins, minerals and plant compounds, some of which have medicinal properties. This is one root vegetable every plantbased Health Seeker needs in their diet.

I discovered beetroot lattes the other day and had no idea what I was missing out on! This frothy superfood drink was such a treat and absolutely delicious on a cool Brisbane autumn day.

I was pleasantly surprised by its subtle nutty flavour when combined with plantbased milk. I made one at home in the time it took to heat a cup of unsweetened Almond Breeze. One teaspoon of beetroot powder and a drizzle honey later, I had myself a lovely, nourishing warm drink to destress with before the mad dash for school pick up.

The Health Benefits

Beetroot is a root vegetable with a large bulbous, tuberous root and tall leafy green and red veined tops. The entire plant can be consumed and provides many nutrients including pigments called betalains, which possess a number of anti-inflammatory properties. Beets are also a rich source of nitrates, which help increase blood flow to the brain and can improve cognitive function.

The juice from beetroot is commonly used by sports and endurance competitors to improve athletic performance. The roots and leaves alike provide good sources of the essential nutrients we all need every day including dietary fibre, folate (vitamin B9), manganese, potassium, iron, and vitamin C.

Beets For Stress

When the body is under stress, whether environmental, emotional or both, the body can react poorly and become acidic. One way to combat acidity in the body is with alkaline foods that help to reduce the physical symptoms of chronic stress. Beetroot and it’s juice are one such food that works effectively to stimulate liver cells to naturally cleanse and protect bile ducts while supporting natural detoxification.

You can reap all the health benefits of this by adding raw or cooked beets to the menu, juicing beets on an empty stomach or by adding a superfood powder like the one I used in my vegan latte.

Any which way, adding a daily dose of this nutrient-rich root vegetable to your diet will go a long way in helping you de stress and feel great.
